Welcome to Belgravia

Belgravia is a quiet, low-density neighbourhood with a menagerie of beautiful properties. Belgravia’s peace is and quiet is tied to its semi-isolated setting. It is bounded on two sides by the river valley and Fox Drive, meaning it can only be accessed from the north and east, where it is bounded by University Avenue 114 Street and respectively. Belgravia is primarily a low-density, single family house neighbourhood though some condo and row housing exists.

The McKernan Belgravia LRT station sits alongside Belgravia’s east boundary. Across 114 Street, you’ll find McKernan school. Belgravia School also operates within the neighbourhood, alongside a large green space.

Belgravia’s history

Belgravia began to be developed in 1912. While the majority of development occurred prior to 1960, a variety of housing exists in Belgravia. Extensive redevelopment has taken place in the past two decades, both in newly-available lots and replacement of existing homes.

Belgravia once sat at the edge of Lake McKernan, which could be found south of the neighbourhood. The lake existed until 1947 until it was drained to make way for residential development in the nearby McKernan neighbourhood.

Belgravia today

Today, some of Edmonton’s most stunning homes sit alongside Belgravia’s west boundary, facing the North Saskatchewan river valley. The city’s LRT line was extended along the eastern edge of the neighbourhood in late 2008, which included the construction of a new station. The LRT station provides an easy link to both downtown and south Edmonton.

Easy access to the North Saskatchewan River Valley, the University of Alberta hospital, the U of A north and south campuses, and Whyte Avenue make Belgravia a very desirable neighbourhood. Avenue Magazine dubbed it the eleventh-best neighbourhood in the city in 2017. Belgravia’s many long-term residents might rank it even higher than that!
