Abbottsfield’s History
The area that is now known as Abbottsfield was annexed by the City of Edmonton in 1961. For an entire decade after annexation, no residential development took place. At the time, the area was thought to be too close to both the Beverly landfill site south of 118 Avenue. At the end of the 1960s, however, work began on transforming the landfill site into Rundle Park, a multiple purpose educational and recreational resource on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River. After these changes took form, Abbottsfield developed rapidly and was built in its entirety in the 1970s. The park remains a popular fixture of the area to this day.
