Fort Saskatchewan was first created as an RCMP fort on the North Saskatchewan River in 1875. Later on, it was incorporated as a village in 1899, and eventually reached city status in 1985. Fort Saskatchewan’s population was 24,569 in 2016.

Fort Saskatchewan’s History
Two major items have shaped Fort Saskatchewan’s growth, one being the railroad. The Canadian Northern Railway reached the community in 1905, putting it on a transcontinental rail line. The second major contributor to the town’s growth has been industrial development. In the 1950s and 60s, major companies such as Sherritt Gordon Mines and Dow Chemical opened large facilities near the town. These developments spurred population growth, with the town’s population increasing from just over 1,000 in 1951 to over 4,000 by 1966. The recent emergence of the Alberta’s Industrial Heartland area has seen Fort Saskatchewan shoot up again, with the population increasing by 10,000 from 2006 to 2016.
Fort Saskatchewan Today
Today, with plenty of job opportunities nearby, Fort Saskatchewan has transformed from a small town to a modern city. Fort Saskatchewan honours its rural roots with its services, as the town’s famous and friendly flock of sheep can be seen trimming the grass in city parks throughout the spring and summer!
Residents can expect all the amenities of a city in Fort Saskatchewan. In addition, the Dow Centennial Centre has given the town a modern facility for events, as well as fitness facilities and indoor sports fields.
