Laurier Heights' History
Laurier Heights was named after Canada’s 7th Prime Minister, Sir Wilfrid Laurier. Indigenous people once made their home among the banks of the Buena Vista Park and Sir Wilfrid Laurier Parks. After European settlers populated the area, the area was used for agriculture and gravel mining. Laurier Heights really blossomed as a neighbourhood after Edmonton’s oil boom in 1947. This was one of the first neighbourhoods in Edmonton to utilize the curvilinear street pattern that makes neighbourhoods much more walkable while also reducing through traffic, compared to a classic grid pattern.
