Leduc’s History

Robert Telford bought a plot of land in 1889 near a lake (now Telford Lake) and a new settlement began. In 1891, the first train stopped in Leduc along the Calgary - Edmonton Railway, which opened the area up to new settlers. Telford became Leduc’s first postmaster, general merchant, and justice of the peace. The town was named after Father Hippolyte Leduc, who had served the area since 1867. The town grew steadily over the years, especially booming when Alberta’s historical oil strike occurred at the Leduc No. 1 oil well in 1947. Leduc became a city in 1983 with a population of over 12,000.

Leduc Today

It is a great place for families of all ages with tons of green spaces, including the Leduc Reservoir (complete with a disc golf course) and Lede Park, as well as a thriving downtown with plenty of great shops and restaurants to discover. Be sure to check out the Leduc Rec Center, a 309,000 sq ft facility that includes three NHL-sized arenas, an aquatic centre, and a curling rink. You can also catch a rugby game with the Crudes, or head to Barney’s Pub & Grill for great eats and pour-it-yourself beers!
