Welcome to McKernan
McKernan is a mature neighbourhood in Edmonton that is home to many University of Alberta students, due to its proximity to the University. This charming neighbourhood gains much of its character from its older homes, large trees, and classic grid system. More about McKernan...

McKernan’s History
Named after John McKernan, a businessman from the City of Strathcona, the McKernan area has a long history with Edmonton’s historic rival. Through a 1912 amalgamation, McKernan, alongside the City of Strathcona, became a part of Edmonton. McKernan was constructed mostly as a part of the grid system, however the southern portion was subdivided with a curvilinear pattern. Most of the residential development was completed in the late 1940s to early 1950s. Additional apartments were added in the 1960s and 1970s.
McKernan Today
Today, McKernan is still mostly single-detached homes and duplexes. The McKernan-Belgravia LRT stop is located at 76 Avenue and 114 Street, alongside the neighbouring Belgravia neighbourhood, connecting residents to downtown and beyond. The neighbourhoods also share a small commercial area with three lots. There are two buildings with shops, some that have been open since 1948, and the empty lot has been reborn as a green space with a community garden with local prairie flora.
