Oliver’s History

Oliver, once known as Edmonton’s “West End”, was renamed after pioneer citizen Frank Oliver in the 1950s. Development started as far back as the 1880s when several institutional structures were built and homes were primarily single-detached houses. However, the area experienced a redevelopment phase that began in the late 1950s and continued into the 1980s when a significant number of new high rise apartment buildings were constructed. As a result, today less than 15% of the community is older than 1960.

Oliver Today

Today, Oliver has become a densely populated neighbourhood with a strong commercial element, making it a very desirable neighbourhood. Avenue Magazine recognized this in 2016, naming it the fifth-best neighbourhood in Edmonton. Its re-development continues with approved plans to build Edmonton’s future tallest residential building, the Emerald Tower.
