Riverdale Homes for Sale

Riverdale remains distinct from other inner city neighbourhoods in that much of its original character has been retained. Some redevelopment is occurring in the neighbourhood, but the cottage-type homes, and elaborate brickwork of the neighbourhoods churches and school reflect the area’s first development.

Riverdale’s History

In 1883, D. R. Fraser purchased land south of 101 Avenue and established a lumber mill at the bottom of Cameron Avenue. A brickyard soon began operating nearby, and residential development soon followed. The coal used by both the mill and the brickyard was mined out of the cliffs that overlook Riverdale. The Dawson Mines, located across the river and near the Riverside Golf Course, employed a number of Riverdale residents until its closure in 1944.

Riverdale Today

There is one school located in the neighbourhood, Riverdale Elementary School, that opened way back in 1924. Riverdale is home to several parks as well: Allan Stein Park, Louise McKinney Riverfront Park, and Riverdale Park. These parks are all well maintained by the City and offer a large variety of recreational activities.
