Rural Strathcona County’s History

The area was first officially recognized in 1893 by the territorial legislature (what we know as Alberta was part of the Northwest Territories at the time) as Statute Labour District #2. In 1996, it became a specialized municipality, on the grounds that it accommodates specific needs of an area that includes both urban and rural territory. Another way that this County is unlike others is that instead of appointing a reeve like most counties, they elect a Mayor.
