Sturgeon County’s History
There has long been a prominent francophone community in the county, as many French-speaking settlers arrived in the area in the 1800s.
The County was initially formed as a municipal district in 1918, and, after a few reorganizations, became the County of Sturgeon in 1961. It was disorganized once again, but was re-established as a county in its modern form in 1997. Sturgeon County celebrates its centennial in 2018.
